Gussie was a dear friend with a great sense of humor.  We had stayed in contact through the years and I knew about her health issues and when I didn't hear from her at Christmas, I kind of through something was wrong.  I will never forget her smile and her love for her family and friends.  Rest in peace dear lady.  You will be missed....love you always -- Donna Ellen Johnson ’62

Both Ron & Heather Meyer Jagodinski of the Crawford Class of 1962 knew Gussie as far back as the elementary grades at John Muir School near 68th street which served the College and Rolando areas of San Diego.  We had a chance to talk to our friend Gussie at the '62 fifty-year reunion gathering.  A rather unusual person being that she was a friend to all ---and we are sure that her goodness will shine on.

I was saddened to see that Gussie had passed away.  I also went to school with Gussie at John Muir Elementary and Horace Mann Junior High.  I have great memories of her sense of humor and fun we had--especially in junior high.....I remember blowing up a pumpkin one Halloween with a cherry bomb and Gussie's love of cherry pie!  Susie Acord Thomas, Gussie and I shared some fun times

Jerome “Jerry” Drilling

September 4, 1944 - April 15, 2015

Fire Captain Jerry Drilling answered his last alarm on April 15, 2015 in Nevada, MO. Jerry was born in Deadwood, South Dakota. After his father returned from WWII, the family moved back to San Diego where his father had a job with the San Diego Fire Department before WWII. While at Crawford, he was a member of the ROTC program where he attained the highest rank possible as a Lieutenant Colonel. Jerry joined the California National Guard and attended San Diego City College where he received a degree in Fire Science. He followed in his father’s footsteps by joining the San Diego Fire Department in 1969 as a Fireman 4th Class. He was promoted to engineer in July 1981 and to captain in January 1989. He always enjoyed telling the story about the time he worked in Fire Prevention/Investigation and his father, Jerome, was the assistant chief of that unit. Around 1974 firemen in Ocean Beach were complaining about cars parked in the alleys denying access to the fire trucks during emergencies. Jerry and his father went out one Sunday morning and located several vehicles parked and blocking the alleys. During one incident, Jerry called for a tow truck. The owner came out and was upset his car was being towed. He asked Jerry his name because he was going to file a complaint. Jerry said “Drilling.” The owner wanted to speak to his supervisor so his father, Assistant Chief Drilling, responded. After Chief Drilling told him his car was going to be towed, he wanted his name too. The chief said “Drilling.” The car owner became upset, thought they were lying about their names and called the police department. Jerry’s brother Greg, who was a police officer and working in the area, responded to the radio call. When Greg arrived and told him his car was illegally parked and was going to be towed, he wanted to know his name for a complaint. Greg said “Drilling.” The owner got a weird look on his face, threw up his arms and went back inside his residence. In 1989, the fire department published a book commemorating the hundred year anniversary of the department. Jerry volunteered to write the history of the department for the publication. It took him a year to research and write the history on his own time and when it was completed, he received accolades from the department for the thoroughness and completeness of his writings. He received a commendation from the chief. In 1990, Jerry was seriously injured in a car accident while responding to an emergency by a car that failed to yield to the fire truck. He medically retired in 1991 with a disability. He moved his family to El Dorado Springs, MO. Where he lived until his death.

Bob has been like a brother to me for 53 years. He fought diabetes all his life -- Bob Harrison '62

The only thing that we know for certain is that we will meet somewhere for pizza and beverages after the service. We are looking for someplace fairly central like Mission Valley. If you have any suggestions please let me know and we will take them under consideration. We are planning on making the service and the meal afterward a CELEBRATION of Bob's life. I know that there is not one of us that can say that he didn't not only put a smile on our face but would actually make us laugh out loud often. He should be remembered for that. Again, I thank you for all your prayers and good thoughts. I know it made it a lot easier not only for me but for Bob, too -- Phil Frye ‘69

Rona Goldfarb

October 1, 1944 - April 23, 2016

Rona passed away in Los Angeles from a form of leukemia. She had a passion for life and spent the last seven years holding on to it with a great spirit and determination.  Rona was a creative soul.  She had a gift for language and music which she brought together in her songs for children.  Each song communicated in a most enticing way the values that Rona embraced fervently – that we must honor and appreciate one another, that we must care for our precious earth, that we must let go and grow up, that we must strive most of all for peace on earth and good will to all.  Her greeting cards expressed her wicked humor with both visual and written puns based on food and drink.  Rona refused to be discouraged and in even at the very end of her life, she was optimistic that “Clarence, The Candy Cane Unicorn” would find its place with children all over the world. She leaves behind her brother, Neil, and her very dear friends who will continue to hold close the memories of a vibrant, athletic, talented, compassionate and very funny Rona -- Andrea Masimow

Marcia MacDonald

February 11, 1945 - October 16, 2022

Marcia passed away in New York City after an acute asthma attack.  Her sparkle will be missed by all those who knew and loved her.

I moved next door to Marcia in 1957 when she was 12.  We were both only children, and I came to think of her as the sister I never had.  Her Mom had a clever, funny, sometimes sassy sense of humor, which Marcia perpetuated. Marcia found fun in unexpected situations.  Her perspective was unique, as was she.  She was bright, quick, and when she entered a room, all eyes were on her.  She was caring, comforting and she easily assessed a person's mood or perspective.  Her childlike persona was just below the surface, popping out when you least expected it, usually sending everyone into hysterics.  While she was in high school, we both -- each with a good friend -- were part of a student group that went to Europe and had a great time riding our Vespas everywhere.  Sometime after graduating from college, she went back "across the pond" living in London for a number of years. When she returned to the US, she fell in love with New York City and in the years ahead nothing we could do could persuade her to move back to California.  She would come sometimes for Thanksgiving or Christmas and was the Godmother to our daughter, Kelli.  She had a very special relationship with children, who trusted her implicitly, confiding in her, were charmed by her and definitely loved her.  When we would tell the children that Marcia was coming to visit, you would have thought we told them they were going to Disneyland! -- Dan Donovan

March 5, 1944 - May 7, 2022

My husband passed away in Newport News, VA where he resided most of the last 54 years.   He graduated from San Diego State with BS and MS and earned his PhD from North Carolina State University.  He taught biology at Christopher Newport University in Newport News from 1968 to 2011. We have two daughters and six grandchildren.  He was able to have both daughters on hand in his final days and died peacefully in my arms.  He was very fond of recalling his youth growing up with his family in San Diego, on Esther Street and his days as a student in Southern California -- Beth Mollick

Ron and I were married in 1966. I worked while got his MS. He was offered his first college teaching job in Virginia in 1968, so off we went.  We had a friendly split in 1970 and I returned to the Bay Area in California. We stayed close friends for 62 years, sharing each other’s joys and sorrows.  I called him every year on his birthday.  I last spoke to him right before his birthday, when Beth was visiting him in assisted living as he was trying to get stronger -- Bernadine “Berni” Berlin Temple ’62

Nancy Murdock Sheeran

October 25, 1945 - January 15, 2008

Nancy passed away in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. She met Don Sheeran at San Diego State where he was an engineering student and married in 1966. Don and Nancy later moved to Chicago where they both got master’s degrees. After Chicago, they moved to Montreal, where Don earned a PhD in Civil Engineering. After Montreal, Nancy and Don moved to Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada where Don worked on many different oil-shale projects. Nancy had two master’s degrees. One degree was in linguistics from Northeastern University in Illinois, and a second in Speech Pathology from McGill University, Montreal. After graduation, Nancy worked in Speech Pathology both in Montreal and Fort McMurray. I visited Don and Nancy in all of these places. During a visit at Fort McMurray in 1996, Nancy told me that she had cancer. She said that it was a slow-moving form and that she would probably be with us another ten years. Last September, I wondered how Don and Nancy were doing and called. Nancy told me then that she did not have much time. She lived two years longer then she told me she would. One of the things that I always remember about Nancy is that I always saw her with a smile. She never had a bad thing to say and was always positive -- Rolfe Pope ‘62

I was reading the obituaries this morning and saw that Jerome Zottolo had passed away.
