My buddy Jeff Dalrymple texted me Thanksgiving Eve.
He was dining with Pen Wilson, his old roommate at College Village
Apartments. Pen roomed with us briefly when Jeff and I moved to
Mission Beach in 1967. Pen wanted to know how much the rent was
for our 2-bedroom place at 3254 Strandway. I was clueless, but
said I would scour the on-line archives of the Union-Tribune and see if I
could spot a rental ad that might have the answer. I didn't find a rental ad, but did discover the snippet below.
The idea of
an operator conjured up an image of Lily Tomlin as Ernestine, although I
guess you DO get an operator if you phone the police. The
phone number in 1968 was 232-6981, then 714-232-6981, then
619-232-6981. Turns out I wasn't the only one with the idea.
Arthur Cox wrote a Letter to the Editor in 1963.
Remington Road? I think that's in the Crawford Attendance Area.
I DO recognize some Colt surnames in this copy from the 1958 City Directory.
By the way, if you've been screaming "CALL 911" all this time, that
option wasn't available in San Diego until 1982. That may have
been the year the police department adopted its new number --
619-531-2000.
Oh, Jeff thinks the rent for our 2-bedroom apartment on the boardwalk in
Mission Beach was $100, although -- he reminds me -- I had to pay $10
extra for a garage.
