The Sikorsky Sea King Helicopter

Six SH-3 Sea King helicopters from Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron HS-12 on North Island fly past an under-construction San Diego Convention Center in 1983.  Yes, there really ARE six helicopters in the above photo.  I believe the grassy area in the foreground is now the San Diego Symphony's Rady Shell.

Here is a photo of a United States Coast Guard HH-3F Pelican taken in 1981.  In the background is the air station on Harbor Drive, where I was stationed during my time in the Coast Guard.  You can see the old seaplane ramps, as well as a yellow line heading across Harbor Drive to Lindbergh Field.  Back in the day they would open the gate, stop the traffic and taxi aircraft such as a C-130 across Harbor Drive.  Also, you can see the Rueben E. Lee in the background at the tip of Harbor Island -- George V. Glover  '73

I took this photo of an HH-3F Pelican at Santa Clara Point, in Mission Beach, on December 6, 1979. Apparently it was a practice rescue run, but they may have been taking photos -- as was I -- of bathing beauties along the shore -- John Fry '62

UH-3H Sea Kings from North Island take off to fight the Cedar Fire in 2003

I'm pretty sure the only Sea Kings still in military service are VH-3Ds that land on the lawn at the White House to transport the President of the United States.
