Torrey Pines Beach • 1946 and 1908
This view from Torrey Pines to Del Mar, with Los Penasquitos Lagoon in the background, looks the same today, but the sailor on the right is probably happy to be home from the war

In this 1908 photograph, a
motorist poses at the crest of Torrey Pines grade, with Los Penasquitos
Lagoon visible behind him. The lagoon was then known as McGonigle Canyon
and the dirt road McGonigle Canyon Road. A nearby Ranger's
station contained a restaurant and a gas station where cars cooled their
radiators after climbing up the hill.
