Douglas F4D-1 “Skyray”, from VF(AW)-3, over North Island around 1957.
It was the only Navy squadron assigned to the North American Air Defense
Command (NORAD), tasked with detecting and defending against enemy
aircraft. Using the early warning radar site on Mount Laguna, the
squadron “consistently outperformed USAF interceptor squadrons in
scramble time and intercept effectiveness.”
