View of Coronado Beach and Entrance to San Diego Bay • circa 1888

This was posted on Facebook by Tom Isom on March 26, 2021.  Tom has long posted wonderful historic images and lately has taken to colorizing them.  I don't know if he colorized this postcard or if it just came that way.  I put a date of 1888 on it because the Hotel del Coronado, built in 1887, is visible in the background.  I wonder if the little pier in the foreground is where cattle hides were hauled aboard ships headed for the East Coast as mentioned in Richard Henry Dana's "Two Years Before The Mast".  A coaling wharf also was mentioned over the years in this spot and maybe, more recently, a bait barge.
