You
all know where this is. Those of you who
haven't visited San Diego in a while will be
surprised to learn the Convair buildings are
all gone. We used to think the B-36 was
built here, but I'm pretty sure these Fort
Worth-built planes are in San Diego being
upgraded with jet engines in addition to the
six giant reciprocating engines.
My
mother worked at Convair in the '50s and I
remember the B-36s flying over our house
very well. Felt like an earthquake. You
would hear that far off rumble and then
the ground would start to shake. Always
knew it was the B36. We'd run outside to
see how many there might be. The most I
remember at one time was six, but that
might be a faulty memory. They were a
powerful sight regardless
