After graduating from
Crawford high school, my mom married her high
school sweetheart Charles Butler (my father).
They had two children, myself and my brother,
Matthew Butler. My mom was very outgoing and
loved her family, friends and work. For many
years she worked as a legal secretary for
several large law firms in San Diego. She
eventually retired from SDSU and within one year
of her retirement, she decided to go back to
work for a law firm in downtown San Diego. She
was diagnosed with cancer in December 2008. My
mom was not one to stay still and enjoyed life
to the fullest. She was a hard worker, and a
loving mother and she is missed dearly by all!

Smooth Jazz 98.1 sends
condolences to the family, friends and fans of
Carl Evans, Jr., keyboardist and founding member
of the veteran San Diego-based group Fattburger.
Evans passed away after battling health
challenges as a result of diabetes. The musical
progeny of former Navy Band master and
accomplished saxophonist Carl Evans Sr. and
mother Clara Lovelace, a gospel singer and choir
director, Carl Evans Jr. was one of the
countrys most acclaimed jazz pianists. Evans
moved to the San Diego area when he was five
years old. He graduated early from Crawford High
School to begin touring with Barry White and,
through the years, many others including Freddie
Hubbard, Cannonball Adderley, Eddie Harris,
Rufus Thomas, Anita Baker, Lionel Ritchie,
Gerald Albright and Nathan East. He recorded and
produced over 25 CDs. Evans had undergone recent
surgeries in his battle with diabetes, including
the amputation of his left leg below the knee in
December, 2007 and another surgery in January.
Numerous San Diego musicians had participated in
recent benefit concerts to offset the cost of
Evans' medical bills. (Thanks to Tony
