The "Cabrillo Freeway" and "Mission
Valley Freeway" Interchange •1948
The patch of trees just below
the center of this photo was where my grandfather, Manuel Madruga,
established a dairy in 1919. He came here from Holtville with his
new bride, her mother, and her blind sister — all from
Massachusetts. My grandmother’s name was Adeline Mae Sears, an
Anglicized version of the Portuguese “Soares”. She was born in
Gloucester, Massachusetts on "Portagee Hill". She was the first one
of my ancestral line not born on the Portuguese island of Pico,
Azores, almost all from the same small village of Ribeiras.
That was also the case for many of the early Portuguese that first
settled in the Point Loma neighborhood of La Playa — Jeff Madruga
I think most of the trees, in the photo above, were part of Kenmore Stables,
owned by M H Golden and his family. Apparently it was adjoined by
the Mission Valley Polo Club. All of that today, I think, is
Fashion Valley. In attempting to place a date on the photo I did a
deep dive into the Union-Tribune archives to research "Cabrillo
Freeway" and "Mission Valley Freeway". See the results below -- John Fry
