LtCol Montroy graduated from Central Michigan University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Spanish. Having completed the Platoon Leaders Class, he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in May 1993. He completed The Basic School and Flight School, where he was promoted to First Lieutenant, and was designated a Naval Aviator in August of 1996. He reported to HMT-303 during October 1996 for flight instruction in the UH-1N.
1stLt Montroy was assigned to HMLA-367 in April 1997. He was promoted to the rank of captain in September of that year and deployed to Okinawa, Japan. He deployed from Okinawa with the 31st MEU(SOC) with HMM-262(REIN) from April until November 1998 aboard USS Belleau Wood. In October 1999, he graduated from the Weapons and Tactics Instructor Course at Marine Aviation Weapons and Tactics Squadron One at MCAS Yuma, Arizona.
In February 2000 until February 2001, Captain Montroy was assigned to HMM-161(REIN) as part of the 13th MEU(SOC) aboard USS Tarawa. During this tour he participated in Operation Southern Watch, Humanitarian Assistance at East Timor, and Operation Determined Response involving the recovery of USS Cole.
From December 2001 to December 2002, he was attached to HMM-166(Rein) for deployment with the 11th MEU(SOC) aboard USS Belleau Wood. During this period, he participated in operations supporting Operation Enduring Freedom at Djibouti.
In January 2003 he joined HMLA-267 and sailed to Kuwait aboard USS Comstock in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. During this period, he participated in combat operations out of Ali Al Salem Air Base.
Major Montroy was assigned to the First Marine Regiment, First Marine Division, as the Regimental Air Officer. During this tour, he deployed to Fallujah, Iraq with Regimental Combat Team 1 and participated in combat operations during Operation Vigilant Resolve. Following this tour, he graduated from the Marine Corps Command and Staff College in Quantico, Virginia and earned a Masters of Military Studies.
Major Montroy returned to MAG-39 in July 2005 and completed refresher training at HMT-303; he then returned to HMLA-367. From HMLA-367, he deployed as an Individual Augment to the 3D MAW (FWD) TACC, serving in the G-3 (Future Plans and Assessment Cell) at Al Asad Air Base, in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM. During this deployment he flew combat missions with HMLA-269 and HMLA-169. Upon return from Iraq, in August 2006, he reported to HMLA-267 and served as the Logistics Officer, the Aviation Maintenance Officer, and the Executive Officer.
Major Montroy joined the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit in January of 2009 and was promoted to his current rank in February. He is currently serving as the Executive Officer.
Lieutenant Colonel Montroys personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal with Combat Distinguishing device, strike/flight numeral 3, Navy/Marine Corps Commendation Medal with gold star in lieu of second award, Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal and the Combat Action Ribbon.
