Eugene Yang, Ernie Wright,
Sharon Culver Considine,
and Said Shaba • Colina Park • May 2013
Thought I would relate to you a journey for
me back to our Alma Mater. Last
Spring I was working on the Chuck Courtney
Scholarship Fund Raiser in Rancho Santa Fe.
The committee selects two high school
seniors from San Diego County for four
year scholarships at the colleges of their
choice. Chuck Courtney was raised in San
Diego and was an Amateur Golfer who won lots
of tournaments at the Junior level, moving
on to the PGA Tour where he was also very
successful. The selection of the scholars
involves several attributes: GPA, high
school activities, charitable endeavors and
must be involved with golf.
The committee works a lot
with Pro Kids Golf. One site is at Colina
Park Golf Course and that is where our two
winners this year were found. Eugene
Yang and Said Shaba were both students at
Crawford, and I had a chance to meet with
them in May at Colina Park. They are
wonderful young men and both are headed to
UC Berkeley. At Crawford, Eugene was ASB
President and Said was ASB Treasurer; both
have 4.0+ GPAs. We should be proud of them!
Plus Said will have the opportunity to play
on the Berkeley Golf Team!
I have attached a photo
of our get-together at Colina Park next to
the bust of former Charger Player, Ernie
Wright. Ernie took this golf course
"under his wing" in the '80s and transformed
it into the beautiful course it is today.
The boys could not
believe I had attended Crawford so many
years ago; I had taken my 1960 Centaur year
book with me which they loved looking
at. I wish them much luck as they
begin their collegiate journeys as they have
worked very, very hard for this opportunity

UPDATE:
Said and Eugene attended all four years at
Berkeley, were roommates each year, and
graduated with excellent
grades. Said is now attending
Law School and Eugene is in Business and
Accounting working for a firm in the San
Francisco area. We are very proud of
them and thought you would enjoy their
follow up -- Sharon Culver
