"The Summer of '42"

Jeannine Berger Passenheim ’60 grew up on Mohawk Street, but during WWII — when her father was a Marine in the South Pacific — the family rented a house on College Avenue and College Place, a little south of Montezuma.

Head of United States Marine Corps Aviation Supply, Jeannine's father was able to spend time with his family while on 3-day pass to San Diego, sitting for this snapshot.  The tree is still there, but the view of Lake Murray Dam is a distant memory.

Jeannine's gaze is elsewhere while being held by her brother.  In the background, behind the trees, is Quetzal Hall, the Women's Dorm at San Diego State.  I've attempted to recreate the view in the 2022 Google shot below.  The red-roofed A-frame at the right is Senor Pancho's, the old Wienerschnitzel at the southeast corner of College and Montezuma.
