Looking north toward Clairemont.  The sign at the center says welcome to Old Town.  Beyond that sign are what appear to be streetcars.  In the foreground is the Sunset Auto & Trailer Court.

 

Here is a different view of the sign visible in the photo at the top.  Below are trailers at Sunset Auto Park.  I think that's Mount San MIguel in the background at the right.  Both photos were taken by Russell Lee in December 1940 for the government's Farm Security Program.  The caption says, "Rent for trailer space here is ten dollars a month with electricity and sanitary facilities, including showers and toilets, furnished."  I suspect you had to provide your own trailer.
