THE ONLY MYSTERY in this Rozelle aerial is the date. The weather department might know, 'cause weather this clear doesn't show up that often. No Coronado Bridge, no 94, no I-5 -- I'm changing my guess to mid-'50s.

Photo also looks like no Westgate Park and no housing north of Highway 80 except the small area south of Lake Murray that was probably built in the early ‘50s. Maybe that is still truck farming in the valley rather than buildings. Infrared always confuses me -- Barbara Bright Wilder ‘62

It’s closer to 1956 or 1957. Lane Field is still there, and it doesn’t look like the old Westgate Park (now Fashion Valley Shopping Center), which opened in1958, has been completed. Allied Gardens is still a small area off of Route 80, Alvarado Estates looks pretty empty (is the old airstrip visible?), and Del Cerro doesn’t seem to have any grading at all --

I can remember seeing pictures of San Diego like this where ‘S’ mountain is clearly visible. I grew up in San Carlos in the mid ‘50s and there seemed to be a bit more out there at the time. Do you think this could an earlier picture? The ‘S’ was covered during WWII. I’m not sure when it was re-painted -- Tracy Jones ’68
