My classmate Setsuo Tajima and his wife Chie visited us on August 9, 2012. He was not an official Exchange Student, but was sent to San Diego to become educated and become fluent in English. His father thought it would be helpful due to the American influence on Japan after WWII. His father was smart to send him. He went to Cal Poly San Luis obispo to become an architect. The "Oak Park Gang" was influential in teaching Setsuo American slang and other words that we dared not think, much less say. His introduction to Tijuana was at our hands. There was the incident about having no passport and being in Mexico and trying to cross into the U.S. I guess we could have been arrested for alien smuggling. We are happy to have him visit due to the fond and exciting memories of eating seaweed candy without being warned and watching Setsuo laugh himself silly as we gagged -- Bob Mardon '64

When Setsuo originally arrived here he lived with my aunt and uncle in Alvarado Estates.  This all came about since my cousin Tony had earlier spent time in Japan and lived with Setsuo's family.  Setsuo was supposed to be in the same grade as me but he needed help on his English.  I never took him to TJ, but we did take him to Belmont Park to ride the roller coaster.  I will never forget what happened after the first ride.  We looked back at Setsuo and asked him if he wanted to go again. He just nodded, so off we went for a second go round.  He had a priceless petrified look on his face -- Mike Culver ‘63
